Dr. Mary Ann Muckaden is a doyen in palliative medicine in India. In addition to her full time commitment to Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, she has championed the cause of palliative care throughout the country and particularly in Maharashtra, leading the way in creating greater awareness for the urgent and critical need for palliative care with the government, medical profession and individuals.

With an MBBS, MD (Radiotherapy), a MSC in Palliative Medicine, Cardiff University, she has also completed the EPEC trainer for Paediatrics and India at the North Western University, Chicago, USA.

Dr. Muckaden is a member of several medical associations such as:

The Integration of Palliative Care into the trajectory of illness as early as possible for patients with life limiting conditions and their families is one of her areas of special interest.

She has played a leading role in the development of Education in Palliative Medicine and holds the following to her credit:

  • Education of medical students of MD, Palliative Medicine & Radiation Oncology, Fellowship under HBNI.
  • Palliative care lectures included in Curriculum of MD Paediatrics, MD Medicine and MS Surgery for Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.
  • Lectures for Palliative Care for various curricula of nurses, social workers, Occupation therapists.
  • Creating and help implement Palliative care policy for Govt. of Maharashtra; training of Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers, Counselors and Health Care Workers for Palliative care in rural areas of Maharashtra through NRHM and NCD.

Her Research work is seminal with over 50 publications in National and International Indexed Journals, 9 book chapters and several IRB reviewed and multi centric projects.
