Patient: Meherwan Hashim

Our patient Meherwan Hashim was a 64-year-old male, and a known case of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung with interstitial lung disease. The family consisted of his mother, wife & daughter. When we enrolled Meherwan, he had multiple symptoms such as breathlessness, pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, decreased appetite, generalized weakness and had skin abrasions over the right hip area. His myriad symptoms made him feel very agitated & frustrated.

On enrolment, the patient’s wife reported that, in the past, the patient had been a jolly person but his condition had changed his personality and he was now a very different man – bad tempered, irritable and glum.

The PALCARE team started him on appropriate medication to bring his symptoms under control and they also took care of his skin abrasions. With psychosocial counselling, the patient’s frustrations were also addressed and he felt calmer. In fact, he felt so much better that he once again started inviting people to come over to visit him and his personality changed for the better once again.

For two to three months, Mr. Hashim experienced symptom control; and that made a birthday celebration with his family possible. He had been very concerned about how his daughter would fare after he was gone but his changed mood made it possible for him to quality time with her during this period.

Through this period, he grew rather attached to the PALCARE medical team and would often miss them between visits. In the month of March 2019, his general condition started to deteriorate. On 10th March 2019, he passed away peacefully at home. The family also felt a sense of peace. Not only because they had been prepared for end of life and had managed to spend quality time with him in the last few months of his life when he had felt comfortable & symptom free, but also because he had once again gone back to his old self.
